What is a filling?

Fillings are the most common type of "restorative treatment". Restorative dental treatment is generally needed because decay has caused a cavity to form in a tooth. Fillings are in many cases the first treatment option that a dentist will recommend for decayed teeth (provided that the decay is in its early stages and has not progressed too far) and the least expensive type of restorative treatment. Filling a tooth literally means that the dentist places material into the tooth to replace the decayed tissue.

What types of filling are there?

There are two main types of dental filling available: amalgam and composite.

Amalgam fillings are made of mercury, silver, copper and tin.

Composite (also known as "white" or "tooth coloured") fillings are typically made of glass particles, resin and a setting ingredient.
